AN INTRODUCTION TO THE APPRENTICESHIP

Our Governance Officer Level 4 Apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme designed for individuals already working in roles linked to governance, compliance, corporate administration or organisational decision-making.

Good governance helps organisations make informed decisions, meet regulatory requirements and maintain effective oversight. This apprenticeship helps employers develop employees who can support governance processes, coordinate meetings, manage committee documentation and contribute to stronger compliance and risk management across the organisation.

Some of the topics covered throughout the programme include corporate governance, regulatory compliance, governance frameworks, committee administration, risk management, stakeholder communication, meeting management and governance reporting.

As part of the apprenticeship, learners also receive a complimentary student membership with the Chartered Governance Institute (CGI), providing access to professional resources, industry guidance and ongoing professional development throughout the programme.

If supporting governance, maintaining compliance and helping your organisation make informed decisions are key parts of the learner's role, this apprenticeship is designed to help them develop the skills needed to do exactly that.


WHAT DOES THIS APPRENTICESHIP DEVELOP?

Through the Governance Officer Level 4 Apprenticeship, learners gain the practical knowledge, skills and behaviours required to support effective governance across the organisation.

Learners develop the ability to:

  • Support governance frameworks and organisational compliance
  • Coordinate board and committee meetings effectively
  • Prepare agendas, reports, minutes and governance documentation
  • Understand regulatory and legislative requirements
  • Identify governance risks and support informed decision-making
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the organisation

The Governance Officer Level 4 Apprenticeship helps employers develop employees who can coordinate governance activities, support senior leadership and contribute to stronger governance across the organisation.

Because the programme is delivered through work-based learning, employees develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours while continuing in their role. This means improvements to governance processes can be implemented throughout the programme, helping organisations strengthen compliance, improve committee administration and create more consistent governance practices.

With stronger governance capability in place, organisations can improve transparency, manage risk more effectively and ensure governance responsibilities are carried out with confidence.

This work-based programme helps you strengthen the practical skills you use in your role. From preparing governance documentation and supporting board meetings to understanding governance frameworks and regulatory requirements, the apprenticeship focuses on the skills that help organisations operate effectively and transparently.

Because the apprenticeship is completed alongside your job, you can apply what you learn straight away. Many learners find they become more confident supporting governance activities, communicating with stakeholders and contributing to organisational decision-making.

Whether you want to improve your performance in your current role or progress into a more specialised governance position, this apprenticeship helps you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to support effective governance across your organisation.

Our Governance Officer Level 4 Apprenticeship is delivered through flexible work-based learning, allowing learners to develop new knowledge and skills while continuing in their role.

Training is delivered remotely using Microsoft Teams, with monthly tutor-led sessions introducing each module. After each session, learners complete an assignment designed to apply their learning within the workplace. 

Learners are supported throughout the programme with regular one-to-one tutor support, helping them develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours.

Every 8–12 weeks, a progress review takes place between the learner, their employer and the tutor. This ensures everyone stays up to date with the learner’s development and how their new skills are being applied in the workplace.

Alongside the core modules, learners also complete wider learning topics including:

  • Equality and Diversity 
  • Prevent and British Values 
  • Safeguarding 
  • Employee Wellbeing 
  • Managing Professional Development

Once learning is complete, learners progress through Gateway before undertaking their End Point Assessment (EPA).

Apprenticeships are designed to support organisations in developing their team, with government funding available to help cover the cost of training.

If your organisation pays the Apprenticeship Levy, the cost of the Governance Officer Level 4 Apprenticeship can be covered through your levy funds. If you do not pay the levy, the government will fund 95% of the cost, meaning you only pay 5%.

To be eligible, learners must:

  • Be currently in employment
  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Have lived in the UK for the past three years
