Develop the Skills to Keep Others Safe

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE APPRENTICESHIP

Our Safeguarding Support Officer Level 3 Apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme designed for individuals already working in roles with safeguarding responsibilities across education, health, social care, local authority services, housing, charities and the voluntary sector.

Safeguarding plays a vital role in protecting children, young people and vulnerable adults. This apprenticeship helps organisations develop employees who can recognise concerns, respond appropriately and contribute to creating safer environments for those they support.

Some of the topics covered throughout the programme include safeguarding legislation, recognising signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation, multi-agency working, professional boundaries, record keeping, safeguarding processes and trauma-informed practice.

Learners also have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications throughout the programme, including a Level 3 Designated Safeguarding Lead (Adults or Children) qualification and Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) Awareness training.

If safeguarding, supporting vulnerable individuals and promoting safer working environments are key parts of the learner’s role, this apprenticeship is designed to help them develop the skills and confidence needed to do exactly that.

TRAUMA-INFORMED PRACTICE

We also offer the option to integrate Trauma-Informed Practice training directly into the apprenticeship, tailored to your organisation’s environment and safeguarding context.

This additional learning explores:

  • Trauma-informed approaches within safeguarding settings
  • Professional curiosity and safeguarding judgement
  • Risk awareness and understanding lived experiences
  • Vicarious trauma and staff wellbeing
  • Understanding fight, flight and freeze responses
  • The Window of Tolerance and recognising dysregulation
  • Practical strategies to support resilience and regulation

This is particularly valuable for teams working in high-pressure safeguarding environments, helping staff remain calm, reflective and professionally responsive when managing safeguarding concerns.

WHAT DOES THIS APPRENTICESHIP DEVELOP?

Through the Safeguarding Support Officer Level 3 Apprenticeship, learners gain the practical knowledge, skills and behaviours required to support safeguarding practices across their organisation.

Learners develop the ability to:

  • Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns
  • Recognise signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation and vulnerability
  • Apply safeguarding legislation, policies and statutory guidance
  • Maintain accurate records and handle sensitive information professionally
  • Work effectively with safeguarding teams and external agencies
  • Promote safer environments and stronger safeguarding cultures

By strengthening these capabilities, organisations benefit from greater safeguarding awareness, improved reporting processes and increased confidence in how concerns are identified, managed and escalated.

Safeguarding professionals play an important role in helping organisations protect children, young people and vulnerable adults. The Safeguarding Support Officer Level 3 Apprenticeship helps employers develop employees who can support safeguarding processes, identify concerns confidently and contribute to creating safer environments across the organisation.

Because the programme is delivered through work-based learning, employees develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours while continuing in their role. This means safeguarding practices can be strengthened in real time, helping organisations improve reporting, increase awareness and create more consistent approaches to managing concerns.

With stronger safeguarding capability in place, organisations can improve compliance with safeguarding responsibilities, strengthen staff confidence and create a more proactive safeguarding culture.

Investing in this apprenticeship also supports staff development and retention by providing employees with structured professional development, while strengthening the organisation’s internal safeguarding capability.

If you're already working in a role with safeguarding responsibilities but want to feel more confident in recognising concerns, responding appropriately and understanding safeguarding processes, the Safeguarding Support Officer Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed to help you take the next step.

This work-based programme helps you strengthen the practical skills you use in your role. From identifying safeguarding concerns and maintaining accurate records to understanding legislation and working with external agencies, the apprenticeship focuses on the skills needed to help keep others safe.

Because the apprenticeship is completed alongside your job, you can apply what you learn straight away. Many learners find they become more confident in handling safeguarding concerns, maintaining professional boundaries and supporting individuals more effectively.

Whether you want to strengthen your current safeguarding responsibilities or progress into a more specialised safeguarding role, this apprenticeship helps you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to support safer environments and stronger safeguarding practices.

Our Safeguarding Support Officer Level 3 Apprenticeship is delivered through flexible work-based learning, allowing learners to develop new knowledge and skills while continuing in their role.

Training is delivered remotely using Microsoft Teams, with monthly tutor-led sessions introducing each module. After each session, learners complete an assignment designed to apply their learning within the workplace.

Learners are supported throughout the programme with regular one-to-one tutor support, helping them develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours.

Every 8–12 weeks, a progress review takes place between the learner, their employer and the tutor. This ensures everyone stays up to date with the learner’s development and how their new skills are being applied in the workplace.

Alongside the core modules, learners also complete wider learning topics including:

  • Equality and Diversity
  • Prevent and British Values
  • Safeguarding
  • Employee Wellbeing
  • Managing Professional Development

Once learning is complete, learners progress through Gateway before undertaking their End Point Assessment (EPA).

Apprenticeships are designed to support organisations in developing their team, with government funding available to help cover the cost of training.

If your organisation pays the Apprenticeship Levy, the cost of the Business Administrator Level 3 Apprenticeship can be covered through your levy funds. If you do not pay the levy, the government will fund 95% of the cost, meaning you only pay 5%.

To be eligible, learners must:

  • Be currently in employment
  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Have lived in the UK for the past three years

If you are unsure how funding works, our team can talk you through it and explain what applies to your organisation.

Meet the tutor - Sarah Gensmantel

"I have many years of experience in safeguarding, pastoral care, and holistic support including MHFA, Trauma-Informed and Psychotherapy for children, young people, and vulnerable adults. Over the years, this work has been immensely rewarding, and it has been an honour to walk alongside the people I’ve supported, witnessing their journeys of healing and personal progress. More recently, I have transitioned into a new role where I can help other professionals reach their full potential, while continuing to provide support where it is most needed."
