ISO 14001:2026, What the Changes Mean for Your Environmental Management System
The latest version of ISO 14001 has now been released, marking an important update for organisations with an Environmental Management System.
ISO 14001:2026 replaces ISO 14001:2015 and introduces a series of refinements designed to make environmental management clearer, more accountable and more aligned with today’s environmental priorities.
The revised standard places stronger emphasis on environmental performance, lifecycle thinking, climate-related considerations, biodiversity, pollution, resource use, and the control of externally provided products, processes and services. These factors are particularly relevant for manufacturers, engineering businesses, and organisations with wider supply chain responsibilities.
The changes are not a complete redesign of the standard, but they do require organisations to review how their Environmental Management System is planned, controlled, documented and improved. Key areas include stronger leadership accountability, improved supplier and lifecycle controls, and more structured evaluation of environmental performance.
Organisations currently certified to ISO 14001:2015 will need to transition to ISO 14001:2026 within the required transition period (April 2029).
So, what should organisations do now? Organisations should begin reviewing their current Environmental Management System against the new ISO 14001:2026 requirements to understand where changes may be needed. This includes identifying any gaps within existing processes, reviewing supplier and lifecycle controls, and checking whether current environmental objectives, responsibilities, and performance measures remain suitable.
Leadership teams should also understand any additional responsibilities under the revised standard, so that transition planning can begin, and any required changes are managed in a structured way.
