The skills that I have developed are definitely how to communicate through what my tutor Marianne called a “soft challenge.” Even if the conversation is the same, it's the mentality behind the conversation that can change how successful the conversation will be. This helped me when it came to having difficult conversations with colleagues over safety, and I have found that it works.

I have also been able to apply my learning around risk assessments directly in the workplace. Before, we didn't have a colour-coded risk matrix or a toolbox talk about what the risk assessments cover and why they are necessary. Once I learned how to navigate and read a risk matrix on the course, I implemented a colour-coded system in my workplace to help colleagues read and understand the risk assessments, especially those whose first language is not English. I also produced a toolbox talk introducing the changes, explaining why the risk assessments need to be read properly and the impact if they are not.

I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship to those who wish to dip their toes into understanding the core fundamental principles of health and safety. It's a perfect course to gain an understanding of the legal, moral, and financial reasoning behind health and safety and how this impacts operations and businesses.

I would love to recommend Marianne and Jo as both have helped me so much in my learning throughout the course. Marianne was an amazing tutor who always encouraged open communication amongst me and my peers to ensure we learn not just from her but from each other. This way of teaching also helped me understand that health and safety reach many aspects of people's jobs which enhanced my learning perspective.

Jo as well had been really supportive during the time between my last module and EPA, she ensured I had enough mock tests to help me revise for the multiple-choice exam that I was most nervous about and ensured that I could reach out to Jo and ask as many questions as I needed to fully understand the exam process and gave open and honest feedback when requested
