The programme has given me a much better understanding of Health & Safety and how it should work in a real workplace. It has helped me become more confident in my role and has also given me a better understanding of why we have certain procedures, risk assessments and controls in place.

I have gained a lot of practical knowledge around risk assessments, workplace inspections, COSHH, manual handling, incident reporting, legislation, monitoring and the importance of keeping good records and evidence. I have also learned much more about how Health & Safety fits together with the wider business and day-to-day operations.

I have been able to apply this learning directly in my work at DK Tools. For example, I have been reviewing risk assessments, looking at Safe Systems of Work, helping with H&S documentation and following up actions from workplace inspections and audits.

It has also helped me look at things differently. Instead of just checking whether a document is there, I now think more about whether the controls actually work in practice and whether the people doing the job understand them.

I would recommend this apprenticeship, especially if you are already working in a business because you can take what you learn and apply it straight away. I also like that it is not just about learning the theory and you are able to build your experience through your actual workplace. For me, it has been a good way to develop a new area of my career while continuing to work.

I would also like to give a big shout out to Jo, who has been absolutely fab throughout the programme. I really enjoyed the way Jo brought different things into the sessions and introduced new ways of learning. The slides, Q&A sessions and breakout rooms were really useful, and I particularly liked being able to chat with the other people on the course in between the sessions. It made the learning feel much more interactive and less like you were just sitting and listening.

Jo has always been very approachable and happy to help, even outside the sessions, and it was reassuring to know that there was always someone on the other side who was happy to answer a question or point me in the right direction.

Darren has also been great and always happy to help, support or read through my work as and when needed. I really appreciate all the support and encouragement from Jo and Darren throughout the apprenticeship.
