With a workforce of between 1,001 and 5,000 employees, Hackney Council delivers a wide range of public services and is recognised for its commitment to creating a fairer, safer and more sustainable borough.

As an organisation that values being open, inclusive, ambitious, pioneering, proactive and proud, Hackney Council places strong emphasis on supporting its staff to develop the skills needed to deliver high-quality services for residents.

Rayyan’s Apprenticeship Journey

Rayyan completed the Internal Audit Technician (IAT) Level 4 apprenticeship whilst working at London Borough of Hackney Council. In a busy local authority setting, he was able to apply his learning directly to audit work that supports effective governance and service delivery for clients.

Reflecting on the impact of the apprenticeship, Rayyan shared:

“The Internal Audit Practitioner programme has had a really positive impact on my development. It provided a wide range of resources that I’ve been able to apply directly in my role, helping me implement effective processes and improve the way I work day-to-day.”

A key part of his experience was the support he received from his trainer Beth. He praised her for being “fantastic” as "she consistently went above and beyond, always being accessible, offering in-depth knowledge, and providing support”.

The Outcome

The strengthened internal auditing knowledge and practical experience he gained whilst working at Hackney Council enabled him to secure a permanent position, and promotion as an Internal Auditor at the council.

Would he recommend it?

Rayyan would “definitely recommend this apprenticeship to others, particularly because of the level of support.” He also highlighted how “the guidance throughout the programme really makes a difference.”

Rayyan’s journey shows how apprenticeships can develop knowledge and accelerate careers. By combining structured learning, with workplace application and dedicated trainer support, he was able to build his confidence and secure the next step in his professional career.
