Greystone Medical Centre
Strengthening Quality Management Within an NHS GP Practice
About The Company
Greystones Medical Centre is an NHS GP practice in Sheffield, serving over 4,000 patients and is rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. Alongside patient care, Greystones has demonstrated a wider commitment to learning and workforce development through Apprenticeship opportunities and the progression of existing employees. This culture created a strong foundation for the Quality Practitioner Level 4 Apprenticeship, which Charlotte Ollerenshaw successfully passed with a distinction, showing how value can be delivered beyond the individual learner.
The Need
NHS GP practices operate in a highly regulated, fast-moving environment, where patient demand, digital systems, compliance, and changing models of care mean that processes must be reviewed and improved continually. For Greystones Medical Centre, developing this knowledge within the team created an opportunity to strengthen operational oversight and improvement. The apprenticeship gave Charlotte Ollerenshaw, who was working in reception and practice administration, a greater understanding of auditing, quality assurance, project planning and process improvement. This enabled Charlotte to apply quality management principles directly within the practice, helping to build capability from within, rather than treating quality management as a separate function.
Building in house Quality capability
Through the programme, Charlotte developed the confidence and technical knowledge to review processes more critically, lead audits, and contribute to projects across the practice. The learning helped connect everyday operational activity with recognised quality management principles, creating a more structured approach to identifying issues, evaluating risk, and implementing change.
"One of the main positives of the course for me, was how much it helped build my confidence"
This created a practical link between the apprenticeship and Greystones Medical Centre’s day-to-day priorities. Quality improvement was not confined to assignments or classroom learning; it was applied directly to live systems, staff workflows, and patient-facing processes.
Improving Patient Access Through Total Triage
The most significant example of business impact came through Charlotte’s End-Point Assessment project, which supported the practice’s transition to a total triage appointment system. The change required a detailed review of how patient requests were received, assessed and directed, as well as the responsibilities and communication routes across the team. Using the quality improvement and project management skills developed through the apprenticeship, Charlotte was able to contribute to the redesign of workflows and support the implementation of the new model. After 18 months, the system was reported to have improved efficiency and patient access.
A Lasting Impact for the Practice
Greystones Medical Centre’s experience demonstrates how the Quality Practitioner Level 4 Apprenticeship can deliver lasting benefits within an NHS GP practice. By applying quality skills to live operational challenges, including the introduction of a total triage model, the practice strengthened process control, improved patient access, and embedded a more structured approach. The apprenticeship also supported workforce development by enabling an experienced employee to progress into management, helping to progress valuable learning and knowledge while developing leadership internally. As a result, quality assurance and process improvement are now more embedded within everyday decision-making. For other healthcare employers, Greystones Medical Centre provides a strong example of how an apprenticeship can support operational efficiency, staff progression and a better patient experience.
