How a Level 4 Quality Practitioner Apprenticeship Helped Transform an NHS GP Practice
At Greystones Medical Centre, a forward-thinking NHS GP practice committed to high-quality patient care and operational excellence, Charlotte Ollerenshaw’s journey from receptionist/practice administrator to Operations Manager highlights the real value of the Level 4 Quality Practitioner Apprenticeship.
After nearly 25 years away from formal education, she joined the practice with dedication and experience, yet quietly doubted her ability to drive meaningful change. The apprenticeship changed that, transforming her confidence while delivering lasting benefits to the practice she serves.
Building Confidence
One of the apprenticeship’s greatest gifts to Charlotte was the confidence it restored. Much of the content was new, yet she quickly recognised that she had already been applying many of the principles in her daily work but lacked the theoretical framework behind them.
“One of the main positives of the course for me was how much it helped build my confidence.”
Through structured learning and practical application, Charlotte developed a stronger belief in her own potential and a refreshed mindset for approaching problems.
A pivotal influence was her skills coach, Ed Johnson. His flexible, supportive approach ensured the learning felt relevant and immediately useful, helping her stay engaged even when balancing work and study demands.
Applying New Skills in the Real World
The apprenticeship equipped Charlotte with valuable technical abilities, specifically auditing and quality improvement. She began leading audits across the practice and contributing to major projects that she previously would not have been involved in. This broader understanding of practice operations proved invaluable.
Her End Point Assessment project focused on a significant initiative: transitioning the medical centre to a “total triage” appointment system. This required a comprehensive overhaul of workflows, patient access, and team processes. Drawing on the skills learnt during the apprenticeship. The results were transformative, and after 18 months the new system has had huge success, improving efficiency and patient access.
Career Progression
The apprenticeship directly accelerated Charlotte’s professional growth. Starting as a receptionist and practice administrator, she was promoted to Operations Manager during the programme and now sits on the management team.
Her enhanced overview of the practice, combined with stronger auditing, project management, and problem-solving capabilities, has enabled her to contribute at a strategic level.
A Lasting Legacy and Recommendation
Today, Charlotte approaches challenges with renewed assurance and a structured, solution-oriented mindset that continues to benefit her role every day. Reflecting on the experience, she said “It has definitely helped with my career progression.”
Charlotte recommends the Level 4 Quality Practitioner Apprenticeship to others.
