Strengthening Safeguarding Leadership Across Residential Care

About Cambian

Cambian is one of the UK’s largest providers of specialist education and behavioural health services for children. Their residential care homes support children with social, emotional and mental health needs providing care, therapy and education within the homes.

Louise is a regional manager, overseeing six homes within the Preston region, ensuring homes are run safely, in the best interest of the children and that they all have robust safeguarding systems in place. As the regional manager to six homes her role means she visits them regularly to supervise and complete monthly audits to monitor quality & performance, whilst also ensuring all individual needs are met.

Why Louise chose the programme

Louise initially enrolled on the programme to further her knowledge into safeguarding to support her role and have the knowledge to support other managers and the children when needed. She found that Enrolling also gave me the opportunity to explore what the course covers for me to review other managers enrolling in the future.”

Experience on the programme

Louise began the programme alongside one of her managers and is currently progressing through the modules, finding that the modules so far have filled gaps in her knowledge. She talks about how Various modules cover legislation that provide further oversight to support these areas and how we can provide additional evidence in the home. Working together during module training to hear what other professionals have implemented in their homes and hearing what others have experienced is helpful.”

For example, our effective communication & person-centred approach” module has linked with legislation and law they are required to follow, and Louise found it useful to discuss how this impacts on us personally and how we can support others when they are affected.” Louise also found that this in-depth knowledge supported in the reflection of her role and how she manages.

Module 6 also provided her with further knowledge on how designated safeguarding leads (DSL) can support others and work with professionals to safeguard all. So far Louise has shared her learning to colleagues in monthly meetings for them to implement; after finding she now has more in-depth knowledge for reviewing safeguarding incidents during audits.

Delivery and support

Louise highlighted the quality of delivery and ongoing support as a key benefit of the programme, stating how the webinars “are absolutely amazing… they’ll benefit the full staff team.”

A key strength Louise spoke about was the flexibility and level of support we have provided, talking about how “Everything’s been taken into consideration… it’s not one set for all.” Highlighting how flexibility in delivery has supported engagement alongside a busy role, “The training is now in two separate sections, which works a lot better… anything that we’ve needed has been supported.”

Recommendation to colleagues

Based on her experience so far, Louise would strongly recommend the programme to others within the organisation, highlighting the value for those stepping into more senior roles, “For new regional managers, I think it would be really beneficial.”
