Developing Governance Talent at Plymouth CAST

Governance Officer Level 4

How Two Apprentices Built Skills and Confidence That Strengthen the Whole Trust

About Plymouth CAST

Plymouth CAST is a family of 34 Catholic schools and one nursery across the Southwest. Guided by Gospel values, the Trust is committed to providing exceptional education where children flourish academically, spiritually, and socially.

Why Governance Training Was a Priority

At Plymouth CAST, investing in skilled governance professionals is key to delivering strong leadership and accountability across its schools.

When two members of the Governance Team, Leah and Mel, enrolled on the Governance Officer Level 4 Apprenticeship, they brought back more than just qualifications they introduced practical tools, deeper insight, and new confidence to the organisation.

Why Leah and Mel Took the Course

Leah initially identified the course while researching training for a new colleague but quickly realised it could also support her own development.

“I started out looking at this for someone else and realised how much it would benefit me, too.” – Leah

Mel, meanwhile, saw the apprenticeship as an opportunity to strengthen her skills as she stepped into a new governance role.

“I wanted to build my knowledge and experience in governance. It was a perfect fit at the right time.” – Mel

Fitting Learning Into the Working Week

Both Leah and Mel were supported by their line manager, who gave them dedicated time during working hours to attend online lectures, complete assignments, and prepare for assessments.

“The blend of live online sessions and practical assignments worked really well alongside our day jobs. It felt manageable and immediately useful.” – Mel

What They Learned

Leah’s biggest takeaway:

“The course helped me see the value of horizon scanning looking ahead instead of reacting to change. That shift in thinking helped me plan better and suggest new ideas much earlier.”

Mel’s perspective:

“I gained a wider understanding of how governance fits across the organisation. I learnt things I wouldn’t have otherwise including areas like finance and operations.”

Growing in Confidence

The apprenticeship didn’t just build knowledge it developed confidence too.

“It built on my existing skills, gave me fresh ideas to apply, and encouraged me to think differently.” – Leah

“I feel more confident and capable in my role — and I feel like I could now support others, too.” – Mel

Real Benefits to the Trust

Leah used her assessment projects to create new templates and provide guidance to school-level clerks, supporting consistency across the Trust.

Mel brought fresh insight to governance discussions, helping to build broader understanding and strengthen the Governance Team's capacity overall.

Would They Recommend It?

Absolutely.

“I would recommend the course to anyone in a governance-related role it covers all areas of governance. The tutors were really knowledgeable and supportive throughout.” – Mel
