Atlas Composite Technologies

Skills Bootcamp in Quality Management, Nick

How Nick Applied His Learning to Support Atlas’ Growth

When Nick, a Project Engineer at Atlas Composite Technologies, was offered the chance to take part in the Skills Bootcamp in Quality Management, he saw it as an opportunity to deepen his understanding of systems and project management. The programme gave him the tools to support Atlas through a reaccreditation process, while also strengthening his ability to contribute to business improvement projects.

To capture the impact, we spoke with Nick and Grace, Head of Strategy & Operations at Atlas, who, together with Jamie Johnson, Head of Engineering, supported Nick’s development through the Skills Bootcamp.

About Atlas Composite Technologies

Atlas Composite Technologies is a leading manufacturer of advanced composite components for aerospace, automotive and defence industries. Quality is embedded in every process, and the business is committed to developing its people to meet the high standards required in a regulated sector.

Why the Skills Bootcamp in Quality Management Was a Good Fit

Grace explains:

“When I first joined Atlas, I noticed staff were very skilled in their specialist areas, but there was less understanding of how different roles connected across the business. The Bootcamp modules went beyond quality management, they introduced areas such as project management, problem solving and data analysis. That broader perspective was exactly what we wanted for our team.” – Grace, Head of Strategy & Operations.

With government funding available, the Skills Bootcamp also provided a cost-effective way for Atlas to offer high-quality training without stretching budgets.

Putting Learning into Practice

For Nick, the course provided immediate value.

“During the project management module, I was able to link the theory directly with what I was seeing at work, like action tracking and documentation. The problem-solving module also introduced new tools, such as fishbone diagrams, that I’ve since been able to explore further.” – Nick, Project Engineer

This knowledge proved crucial when Atlas expanded to a second site.

“We completed a pre-audit to check for gaps in the paperwork, made the necessary amendments, and then went through the AS9100 accreditation process. The auditor went step by step through everything we had in place and was very happy with the results. Having the Skills Bootcamp knowledge made that whole process much stronger.” – Nick, Project Engineer

Broader Business Impact

The programme has helped Nick contribute beyond compliance activities.

“It’s shown me how to build a business case. I used that to propose a software upgrade that improved efficiency and saved money, which was approved. That’s been a real benefit to the business.” – Nick, Project Engineer

Grace has also seen the wider value:

“The training has broadened perspectives across our team. It’s not just about quality; it’s about understanding how different parts of the organisation fit together. Nick has taken that learning and applied it in a way that has directly supported our growth.” – Grace, Head of Strategy & Operations

Would They Recommend It?

Both Nick and Grace agree that the Skills Bootcamp is worth the commitment.

“It’s an intensive course, and you need your employer’s support to set aside the time, but it’s worthwhile. It’s given me a strong foundation to keep developing and applying new skills at work.” – Nick, Project Engineer

“The affordability makes it a real opportunity for employers. It’s training that adds value without breaking the bank, and the benefits are clear for both the individual and the business.” – Grace, Head of Strategy & Operations
