BS OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management is changing…

During the 1970s, health and safety laws were introduced to help manage and reduce accidents, illness and, more importantly, deaths within the workplace. Following on from the legislation, the British Standard OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management was created to assist organisations in putting policies, control measures and procedures in place to achieve optimum working conditions standardised to an international best practice.

In March 2018, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety, the world’s first standardised health and safety management system, was introduced to provide a more manageable, yet enhanced framework which aligned to other standards in the quality management family; ISO 9001 Quality Management and ISO 14001 Environmental Management. The new international standard will eventually replace the existing British Standard framework and any organisations which hold OHSAS 18001 will need to ensure they migrate to ISO 45001 by 11th March 2021; otherwise their certificate will expire, and their health and safety accreditation will become invalid.

ISO 45001:2018 shares many similarities with the existing OHSAS 18001 standard with the additional benefits of:

  • A greater commitment from top management in all processes.
  • An increase in organisational awareness of occupational health and safety risks and associated operational controls, communication and training.

Clear Quality can assist with every aspect of the migration process from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001. Contact us to arrange a free, no obligation meeting to discuss your requirements and see how we can help.
