Being a First Time Manager

Stepping into the role of a first-time manager can be both exciting and daunting. As a new manager, you have the opportunity to shape your team's culture and make a meaningful impact on your organization. However, the transition from an individual contributor to a manager can also be challenging, with new responsibilities, expectations, and relationships to navigate.

So here are 5 things to keep in mind:

  1. Don’t get bogged down in the details!

As a manager, it can be easy to get distracted by the daily priorities, but remember, your role is now to delegate, oversee and make big-picture decisions. Trust your team and let them handle the smaller details so you can focus on the larger goals for your company.

  1. Communication is key!

It is now up to you to make sure your team fully understands what is expected of them! Most find that having an ‘open door policy’ works best, because if your team know that you are available for feedback and questions, it will prevent a lot of misunderstandings in the future and will keep everyone on the same page. Keeping an open dialogue will also encourage your team to be open and honest about the barriers they face and any issues they may have.

  1. Don’t be too hard on yourself!

It is normal to feel like you’re not doing perfectly all the time. Remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes and learning as you go will only make you a better manager (and even person) in the long run. Don’t be afraid to seek feedback from your team, not only will their criticism help you improve within your role, but that sort of honesty with your team will inspire their own development and self reflection.

  1. Have a cake day!

(Literally or not literally – up to you) But either way it IS important to recognise and celebrate the successes and achievements of your team. Take the time to shout about the hard work and accomplishments and even single out individual achievements. This will help boost morale and motivate your team to continue doing great work.

  1. Have fun!

Being a manager doesn’t have to be all work and no play! Make sure to have fun with your team, whether that means organising team-building activities, team days out or showing your appreciation with small gestures. When everyone is happy and engaged, good work is sure to follow.

So, there you have it, some tips for being a first-time manager!

Remember that your team is looking to you for guidance and support, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yourself along the way. If you keep a positive attitude, remember to celebrate the successes and communicate well, you’ll be on your way to being a great manager.
